There are towns that try to be a destination and towns that simply are one. Morganton, the county seat of Burke, falls firmly in the second camp. A grid of brick storefronts around a working courthouse, a riverwalk along the Catawba, a 1916 theater still booking the good acts, and a downtown short enough to cross in fifteen minutes and deep enough to spend a weekend in.

It's the quiet capital of the foothills — within an hour of the South Mountains, Linville Gorge, Lake James, and the Brushy range that hides the Yadkin Valley wineries. People come through on the way to somewhere bigger and end up staying an extra night. The map below is for those people.

What follows is unbiased on purpose. We've marked every restaurant and brewery in the walkable downtown core, but we haven't named them. The idea is to put the discovery back in your hands — wander, look at the menu in the window, follow your nose, ask the bartender what's good two doors down. The town rewards that kind of attention.
